THE BILLBLES PACER · EXCEL WORKBOOK
Your firm tracks your billable hours. Your job is to figure out if they add up to your target.
The Pacer forecasts what your current billing pace gets you at the end of your billing cycle, and what has to change if you’re behind. Three numbers a week; it does the rest. Built by a practicing Big Law associate who got tired of constantly redoing that math.

Why This Exists
After so many in years in Big Law, I still need to sit down and plan out my year and periodically check in throughout the year to make sure I’m still on track. Practically speaking, this “periodic check in” took the form of constantly doing (and then re-doing) the math by hand to see where I was. And what if I worked more or less per day? What if I took more vacation or less vacation? This exercise took forever—time that I didn’t have. I was more than willing to pay my problems away. But I couldn’t find a single product out there that did exactly what I wanted. So I built one.
Easy setup. Easy maintenance.

"This billable tracker has been a game changer for me. It helped me recognize patterns in my billing habits and adjust accordingly to make sure that I'm on target for the year. It also guided me towards meaningfully planning for my longer trips and weekend excursions and helped me move towards a more balanced workload."

-
"I've spent years tracking my billable goals on a legal pad, recalculating every time something popped up, got in the way of my plans, and threw the math off. This product does all of that for you, and then keeps adjusting as you actually log your time. It's the first tool I've seen that treats hitting your target as something you manage all year, not something you panic about in Q4. Genuinely impressed!"

"Meeting billable goals is hard, but math is harder. Using my time to calculate my progress towards billable goals has always felt like one step forward and two steps back. Enter the SBL Billable Hours Tracker. This easy to use spreadsheet took less than a tenth of a second to figure out my progress thus far and create future targets to ensure I meet my goals. The time this saves me can now go towards meeting those goals or enjoying some much needed time away from the computer."

Your firm’s resources are going to only show what you’ve billed to date and an estimate of where you’ll end up. But, none of them give you the flexibility to scenario plan based on billing different hours or for a different number of days. Recording your hours is the easy part. The Pacer is for everything that comes after. And unlike a firm portal, it comes with you when you change firms.
